Nineteenth Century Europe
Nineteenth century Europe was a time of rapid progress in science, literature, technology, and growth. Three major events took place during this time period: the Industrial Revolution, the Age of Romanticism, and the Rise of Realism. Each was original in its own way but they all contributed to the overall culture of Europeans. Major pollution and poverty came with this rapid progress. The European people found ways to deal with these hardships and continued to grow and prosper.
Czar Alexander II of Russia is Assassinated
- Czar Alexander II achieved great accomplishments in liberalizing and modernizing Russia.
- He was responsible for the abolishment of serfdom in 1861.
- Some people didn't like him because whenever his power was challenged, he would become repressive.
- "People's Will" was a group formed in Russia designed to overthrow Russia's autocracy.
- This group promoted terrorism and assassination in order to achieve their goal.
- On March 13, 1881, a member of the "People's Will" assassinated Alexander II by using a bomb.
- His son, Alexander III, took over as Czar of Russia.
- The people who were involved in the assassination were eventually arrested and hanged.
